Dr Volker Erhard wrote to us in the name of the German President Horst Köhler and presented the statement of the German President about our initiative:
Dear Mrs. Brakoniecka,
thank you very much for your email to the Federal President's Office where you pointed your article out on www.scholar-online.eu and where you suggested to declare 4th June for a European holiday.
The Federal President enjoys initiatives which inspire European citizens and mainly young people for project European agreement. The Federal President keeps 4th June for an important historical datum. Just some few days after the celebrations in Cracovia where the German Chancellor was invited by her colleague, the Federal President received at 9th June Lech Wałęsa in Castle Bellevue. He spoke thanks of Germany to Lech Wałęsa, Solidarnosc and the Polish nation and underlined without the brave and peaceful revolutions the German reunification and overcoming of Middle and East Europe wouldn’t be possible.
About implementation of European holidays can decide just the responsible European institutions. Currently there are two so called Day’s of Europe: at 5th May we remember foundation of Council of Europe in the year 1949, at 9th May we remember so called Schuman declaration about Coal and Steel Production’s Community which was made to a foundation of the today’s European Union. This European Day of European Union was proclaimed during the summit in Milan by heads of states and Prime Ministers in the year 1985.
