OPEN LETTER TO JERZY BUZEK
NEW PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
Dear Mr President of the European Parliament,
First of all I would like to sincerely congratulate you on your election to the post of President of the European Parliament and I wish you much success during your mandate.
At the same time I would like to draw your attention to a project which is already a European project for many Europeans, even if it has until now only been financed by private means.
The basic premise of the project is the following assumption: European integration is not only about big politics, but it is above all about us, the citizens of Europe. Through this project we can see our cultural heritage and those of others not only with our own eyes, but also through the eyes of the Polish, the English and other citizens of Europe. Anybody can post an opinion without being registered and this opinion is then translated into the other languages of the project (at the moment these are: Polish, German, English and partly Russian and French). A dialogue between Europeans is thus made possible. Our main topic is called: :: I am European and I am proud of it; many different political, social and cultural aspects are discussed here. People who participate in the discussion come from various age groups and different corners of Europe, and even the world. Each opinion is a contribution toward improving the understanding between us. It is also a way to learn together. By explaining our points of view about politics, history, society and through questions and answers, we can paint an actual and even more realistic image of a Pole, a German, an English person etc. As :: Miro from Germany wrote: “If we want to inspire enthusiasm for politics among young people we should show them how. This project offers incentives for young people as well as for weakly represented politicians to discuss various topics. They can familiarize themselves with the attitude of others through an international and cross-cultural dialogue and they can learn something new. They can see that it is possible to talk together.”
This project developed rapidly and was greeted with great enthusiasm from the very beginning. There is no well-known company giving us funding. We do not get any instructions from the outside – we are independent. Despite not having advertised our website, we have already had more than 250,000 visits (mostly from Europe). We support actions connected to the education of young people. José Manuel Barroso, current President of the European Union, likes our work. We have presented the points of view of various politicians on current and historical events, e.g. those of Poland’s President, Lech Kaczyński and of the President of Germany, Horst Köhler.
Human beings are at the heart of our project. For this reason we added to our project the :: Gallery of Europeans, where anybody can introduce themselves – all they have to do is send us a short description and a photo. These profiles are also translated into other languages (Polish, English, German). By doing this, we endeavour to build an even more accurate picture of Europeans and to challenge the stereotypes. The first Europeans in our gallery are Ola and Kasia (both from Poland) and Luisa from Portugal.
Many of our visitors have made statements similar to that of :: Isabel from England: “We have criticised Merkel and Brown and other national politicians. But another important dimension of Europe's problem is the lack of a strong presence of the European Union as one. There is no feeling of being a part of the European Union and there are almost no efforts to build such feeling. There are many projects between certain EU-members, like Polish-English, Polish-German or German-French, but there was no united project for every European, until Scholar came in. Scholar connects all these features and gathers Europeans through discussions. You don't have to speak foreign languages or be registered to take part in discussions. Scholar needs further support, support from the EU. Finally Scholar promotes values represented by the EU and EU goals as well. Jose Manual Barroso has been spending all his efforts campaigning, rather than doing his job. He should have come to Chemnitz to present Scholar as a European project instead. Europe needs you, Scholar!”
I would like to mention that we have financed the project by private means so far, but it is in danger of falling apart, even though it has been a success right from the beginning: it has been welcomed by Europeans with enthusiasm and it is growing rapidly (we get approximately 10.000 new visitors weekly). But the finances are dwindling and without any support the development of the project will come to a halt. :: Radka wrote: “I agree we have a deficit on democracy, because we don’t support good, healthy initiatives. We have here a Europe-wide project and it is not politically supported. I am angry when I see other senseless projects which are financed with State or EU money.”
As President of the European Parliament, we ask you for support, politically as well as financially.
Our aim is to build genuine bridges and bring Europeans together. Our team is ready for further work and wants to support European integration and a better understanding between Europeans full time. We should start the essential work as soon as possible.
We have presented to you a project which has already had a lot of success - without doing any advertising or PR work. It is a project worth investing in. We urgently need financial help to continue our work.
We ask you to help us turn the platform Scholar-online.eu into a real European project.
Best wishes,
Anna Brakoniecka and Team at Scholar-online.eu
