Autoball - Bal Samochodowy - Car Ball 2010 :: TV total + Stefan Raab (04.06.2010)

„Let me entertain you“ was changed successfully into „We love to entertain you“ and it dominated in the Lanxess Arena in Köln during the last show of Stefan Raab before the summer holidays 2010. Stefan Raab, the German comedian, musician and all-in-one-entertaining engine of the TV Total – machine is known for Polish people mostly because of his many Polish jokes and Europeans (or even people of the world) know him as the éminence grise in the case of Lena Mayer-Landrut (winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2010) took a new, innovative challenge. After success of the so called WOK-WM (Wok world championships is a winter trend when you don’t take slide, but the wok and you simply slide down from a ski-jump, it’s a new winter sport trend) and different song contests (“Stefan Raab is searching for a sing star” or “Our star for Oslo”), a new extension of the so called Car Ball Championship was realized.

Everybody, who have no idea what it is about, here a short description:

Two opponents fight against each other and play football during they drive a car (it’s like polo, but with VW polo). It sounds more ridiculous as it is. At the same time, it’s just about a game with two goals and one giant, round ball. It is about people, who don’t come from the world of the Formula 1 or Dakar. Prominent representatives change shortly into gladiators on a small football field and wear car suite of armour.

This year’s edition was full with testosterone of following celebs:

- Stefan Raab for Germany
- Joey Kell for Ireland
- Giovanni Zarella for Italy
- Ailton for Brasil
- Ross Anthony for England
- Harry Wijnvoord for Netherlands
- Henri Leconte for France
- Daniel Aminati for Ghana.

The Show was entertaining and it was not a hollow promise of Pro7, but real case as already the moderators Sonja Krauss, Elton, Matthias Openhövel and Frank Buschmann announced at the beginning. There were many jokes more or less below or exactly on the belt, but everybody was ready not only to laugh out others, but to laugh about own weaknesses or at least to put a good face on the matter.

There were many crashes, not only as cars were driving into each other or as they have come more or less unwillingly into the cement wall. The giant balls flew in the air and sometimes, they even fell apart. Not only chosen artists as my favourite star-light Muse, Lena and Stefanie Heinzmann feat Gentleman were responsible for the musician tributes, but also less professional fans that shared the thrill, sung with celebs and drummed/thrummed.

What was especially interesting for me was the new German patriotism that I see lately even more often: black-red-gold colours are used not only as a motivation and as good luck charms during the international song contests, but they totally fulfill events as the one by Stefan Raab. Questions how the Germany should deal with it and how other nations should handle it came mostly through my mind as Stefan Raab scored a goal. The wave of fans screamed and fulfilled the Lanxess Arena with enthusiasm.

Moreover, it was interesting to see artists backstage, as they were preparing themselves. Of course, the moments after the award ceremony were very exciting. Stefan Raab told in an interview how willingly he takes new challenges and that it’s not only about winning. Fair play and having fun should be included. Joey Kelly (yes, yes, former member of the Kelly Family, in the meanwhile rather a sport-alike type) and Daniel Aminati (German moderator of “taff” and “Galileo”) are very friendly and they showed themselves from the best side. Generally, I was positively surprised, excluded the fact that Stefan Raab seems to be bigger on TV than he is in reality and that Lena (yes, Lena = German music satellite in Europe) looks quite inconspicuous to me (just backstage).

Many thanks to Christoph and Michael from Pro7 for the invitation and we will see us the next time!

Additional comment from us (9th June 2010):

We got a flood of mails after our report about the “Autoball-WM”. Poles asked why Scholar Online Europe visited such a “Poles-hater” Stefan Raab. Now, I ask myself once more about the German-Polish communication and stereotypes in general.

By now, the terms “stereotypes” and “discrimination” belong to our daily routine and complicate our life. If you don't express “politically correctly”, you get a call to order immediately and we nearly are forced to lie or “to sugar-coat”. When you are a bad employee and if you have not all fingers and thumbs, you never get such direct criticism, but you would be only asked “to offer your activity somewhere else” or “to face up in another area/company to new tasks”. Jokes that could be told in former times without problems, are by now “satanic hints” and “discriminatory”. Kuba Wojewodzki, Dieter Bohlen and other entertainers sometimes overdo, but they should have a certain tolerance. Otherwise, we don't have the freedom of speech at all and the old (nomen omen) joke will come true again, not only in a political way.

An American meets a Soviet citizen and says:
- In America, I'm allowed to say everything what I want to say and I won't be punished for it. We have freedom of speech. I could go and stay in front of the White House and scream aloud “Bush, go away!” I bet you in the Soviet Union can't act like that.
The Soviet citizen answers:
- We also have freedom of speech. I can go and stay on the Red Square and scream “Bush, go away!”

Stefan Raab is in my opinion no “Poles-hater”. He isn't a single entertainer, who uses such jokes in his shows, either. Jokes base upon stereotypes.

Stereotypes only will hurt me, if people, who use them, are convinced about its truth. A German student of political science told me, that Poland is largest underdeveloped. I asked, how he formed this opinion and if he has been ever to Poland. He couldn't believe that every big city in Poland looks by now like Berlin, Munich or other European cities. Just people on the streets predominately speak Polish.

Educated people take stereotypes among all as an egress to discussions, to discovery of the reality, as barometer which attributes/aspects are media-friendly. As long as we (want to) get high on “Bild” or “Fakt” (Polish substitute to “Bild” of the “Axel Springer Media group, named daily papers are yellow press, comparable with e.g. “the Sun”) and only want to hear “nice words”, the factoids and “politically correct” comments will be an applicable and societal law. If want to change them, it is not enough to complain and to hope that you will be answered. The Poles steal, the Czech prostitutes are always standing on the roadside, West Germans are equated with the over-trendy Munich society and East Germans are simply speaking East German (so called “Ostdeutsch”). Let's learn to handle that, let's keep the level and please don't let us take everything too seriously. That's how we can build new stereotypes and new image step by step and consequently. Let's talk and stay open minded. We shouldn't act according the so called “the Kali-law”: Kali takes two cows – a good deed. Kali’s two cow were stolen – a foul deed.”. Moreover, who among us does not use stereotypes or ever told a discriminatory joke, should cast the first stone.

Szacunek, współczucie, smutek, oddanie należnego hołdu Prezydentowi to jedno i z tym chyba zgadzamy się wszyscy lub zdecydowana większość. Ale ta decyzja o Wawelu jest zupełnie nieprzemyślan
