We are Europe
Even if we want to see ourselves more and more often as modern citizens of the world, our sense of being modern decreases with the number of stereotypes we have of other nationalities or cultures. Only dialogue can overcome these and cause a better understanding of each other. – That is concept of the founders of the portal Scholar-online.eu (http://www.scholar-online.eu).
“The European integration is not only great politics, but also regular citizens, women, men, children, husbands, wives, workers, doctors, students, pupils, old and young”, says Anna Brakoniecka, the founder of this portal, which is a platform for conversation for all Europeans. “Everybody is worth to get to know. And we get to know each other in the conversation”.

The conversation is also the source of knowledge about the world and the best method of learning. And learning, which is also the meaning of the portal`s name (scholaris- derived from Latin and meaning “belonging to school”, “pupil”), is part of all our lives. A conversation is also a journey, a real one, because the sense of a journey is to get to know the different and that is also the aim of the portal`s founders.
The special feature of Scholar-online.eu, also called Scholar Europe, is the conversation in different languages: all texts, comments or statements in the forum are continuously being translated and published, in Polish, English and German and partly even in Russian and French. Thanks to this communication without limits to the language, understanding each other is possible and it can be discovered that the only differences between the people are most likely to be the different countries that people come from and their mother tongue. A. Brakoniecka explains: ”We want to spread openness and tolerance and get to know new, undiscovered worlds. We want to discover our own cultural heritage as well as that of others, not only see the world with our eyes, but also with the eyes of Germans, English and other citizens of Europe. In this way the mixture of languages steps aside.”
About politics, culture and everyday life
The portal Scholar-online.eu is meant as a place for every European to talk about important and less important questions, about everyday problems, worries and happiness. The visitors of the portal are mostly students and working people between 18 and 45. At least these are the results from the mails to the editorial team and from the comments and emails. “Sometimes we get emails from pupils that are just about finishing school and sometimes from younger pupils that want to underline how much they have learned about Poland or Germany by using our portal”, are the words by A. Brakoniecka.
The main areas of the portal are:
• :: Our topics, the discussion forum, where the users can lead the conversations with each other and describe important or less important political, social or cultural events.
• :: Gallery of Europeans, where everybody can introduce themselves, their opinion about Europe and their current activities. The special guest in the gallery is amongst others Władysław Bartoszewski, but there are also other Europeans such as Ola from Poland, Dimitar from Bulgaria, Amalia from Italy or Vera from Czech Republic.
• :: Gallery of Projects, where projects from all over Europe can be presented in order to inspire other Europeans or to make them leave a comment and by that motivate the project`s founder to further efforts.
Dialogue without breaks
The team consists of a dozen young people, who come from different countries (Poland, Germany, Armenia, Kazakhstan, France) and live in different European countries. Most are working as translators. Thanks to this experience in work and life, they can realise the idea of the portal. “In the editorial team it is important to us that all entries are being translated as fast as possible in order to continue the discussion”, says A. Brakoniecka.
Our Team translates and explains the context, if necessary, in case political, social references or wordplays would be hard to understand.
The major part the portal`s content is made up of entries in the forum, there are also articles, News or longer texts. “We adapt ourselves to the situation: When we take part in a project, when a current political or social event causes a discussion, then all that is reflected in our texts”, explains the portal`s founder. Such texts developed e.g. after the participation of the Scholar-representatives in the project Historical Forum Berlin or Educational Expedition Germany. Other examples are the articles about the Nobel Prize for Barrack Obama, the elections for the European Parliament or the anniversary of June 4th 1989. We also published articles by guests of the portal, such as “20 years German reunification or not?”, written by Sebastian.
Behind them half a million guests and what is in front of them....?
Where is this project going? “In every case we are trying to destroy stereotypes so we can understand each other better and better”, says A. Brakoniecka. “At this point in time we have reached 500.000 Europeans, who came to learn about us by friends.” The team says, that its work for Scholar Europe is not only correct, but also politically necessary, but they still don`t have enough support from the politicians and the media. “We wish to get more help and that the political and media slogans about European integration are not only empty words”, says the founder of the portal, who sadly admits, that asking amongst others Jerzy Buzek and José Barroso for support did not bring more than compliments.
We invite everybody to take part in the discussion. The more opinions, the more voices from different places we have, the easier can be shown representatively how the modern Poland and the Polish are being seen in Europe (so that Poland in the new, recent light is not being mistaken for old, wrong stereotypes). “Don`t be a Zero, be a European hero”, wrote one of our guests in an email and tried to motivate people to support our project.

Successes: first of all the change in perspective towards Poland, better understanding because of innovative dialogue. Many compliments from important, European politicians. When we started with the project in the contest “Innovation IT” in February 2009 under the patronage of iMittelstand (union of small and middle size enterprises), we became noticeable and were honored with the sign of this well-known and in Germany reputable organisation. The experts of iMittelstand have highly valued our project and gave us the right to use their sign as a proof of high quality. We are all the more proud as we received this award in the beginning.
